Another Long Weekend

This weekend was Thanksgiving up here in Canada, but due to the complications of family life there was no turkey involved. This makes the second Thanksgiving in a row for me with no turkey. Christi-Ann and Dwight ended up at his mother's place for their dinner. Jen won't be coming home until Thursday (two days from today) so I think the plan is to eat the bird on Friday night. I'm kinda hoping it won't be on Friday night cause it would interfere with youth.

The long weekend as a whole wasn't terribly busy, but there was enough to keep me occupied. It was great to spend some time with Mel while she was back for the holiday. Last night my parents and I had James, Amanda, and Kyrsten over for some roasted chicken. Kyrsten is absolutely adorable. Some old friends of my parents came to visit as well which is always fun to hear the stories.

Friday night we took the senior youth to see The Guardian which I was caught off-guard by how well the movie was done. Definitely a touching movie.

On Saturday I rented United 93. It's been a movie I've wanted to see because nearly all the reviews I've read about the movie basically raved about it. It totally lives up to the reviews. The movie is exceptionally well done and extremely sensitive to the subject matter being dealt with. It's hard to believe that this movie came out of Hollywood because it feels nothing like a Hollywood movie. There's not much of a score at all. The whole movie is done in real time, recounting the events as they happened. It's amazing how chilling seeing a plane's radar blip disappear from a screen. There was no music cue or anything. You're just left to experience the fear and panic in the air traffic control room even though they don't know what really happened at that point. I highly recommend United 93, but it's the kind of movie you have to be in the mood to watch.

Matthew.
