Software, Pirates, and Undead Monkeys
My trip to Toronto for training went pretty well. George and I took my Jetta which meant I drove the whole weekend. The hotel we stayed at was okay. It was a little run down and not as clean as it could have been. Plus it was super empty so when we went for breakfast the first morning we were the only customers to be seen. The waiter seemed a little too excited that he finally had customers.
George and I did pretty well at not getting lost in Toronto, but we did end up being a little late that first morning. The Cognos training facilities are quite nice. They even have a student lounge with a fridge stocked with pop and juice, and a coffee / cappuccino machine. It was pretty impressive. The first day of training was pretty simple stuff that mostly involved the instructor leading us through the step by step instructions provided in the student guide. Day two was similar but had a lot more meat of how Cognos works, details about the software architecture and how modular the software is depending on the hardware available.
The sessions were from 9-5 both days which left us with Thursday night wide open. George and I went to our second buffet restaurant in 2 days and then I visited with Dana, Andy and Nathan for an hour or two at a Chapters/Starbucks near my hotel. We had asked to start the training earlier on Friday but we didn't have the same people on both days. So that meant fighting rush hour traffic out of Toronto as they all headed North to their cottages for the weekend. I was definitely wishing for an automatic car with all the stop and go on an eight lane divided highway. I pulled into my driveway at 10pm Friday night.
Not too much of not happened over the weekend. Ended up seeing Pirates of The Caribbean 2 with Steve and a couple youth. I though it was just as much fun as the first movie, with plenty of nods to the first one. Definitely a worthy sequel, just not sure if it's better or not than the first one. The first was a total surprise because it seemed to catch everyone off guard with out great it was so this movie was super-hyped with tons of expectations. They did a good job of living up to both. If you go see it there's an added scene at the end of the credits just like at the end of the first one. Seems to be the thing to do this summer with X-3 and Cars also have extra scenes at the end.
This week it's business as usual. Practice tonight since we're leading the music tomorrow (Wednesday) night for the prayer service. Hopefully we'll have enough songs ready to help fill in the time and set the mood.
Matthew.
