Superman Has Indeed Returned
Well this Canada Day weekend was a bit of a bore. No offense what so ever to James and Amanda who I spent most of Canada Day with. It rained pretty much all day so we were cooped up inside watching episodes of 24 and Annapolis. It just seemed like everyone cleared out of Sudbury for the weekend. Even church was fairly empty this morning... err yesterday. Forgot it's Monday since I had the day off.
After spending today mostly indoors I wanted to go out and do something no matter what. So I did something I've never done before in my life. I went to see a movie by myself. I've been looking forward to Superman Returns for a number of reasons. First is that it's Superman. What guy growing up didn't drape a bath towel over their shoulders, wanting to fly and save Lois Lane? Second - Bryan Singer is director. I haven't seen a movie he's directed that I haven't liked and he's already got a proven track record of making a comic book come to life in X-Men. Just like Peter Jackson and King Kong, directing a Superman movie was Singer's life-long dream. But I was having a hard time convincing others to see it with me so I figured I might as well go now since Pirates of The Caribbean opens this coming weekend and they'll want to see that.
The movie was great. This movie takes place 5 years after Superman 2 so it's not a re-working of the franchise like Batman Begins. I wouldn't say that watching the first two films are required but there are a good number of inside jokes and minor plot points that make the viewing all that more enjoyable. Brandon Routh fill the role of Clark Kent and Superman incredibly well. I've heard a number of people remark that "It's just not Christopher Reeve." Well Singer made sure that Routh's performance paid due respect to Reeve's work with the characters and it shows. Routh's Kent is just as clumsy, but more charming and his Superman is just as dashing and graceful while flying. The whole move pays great respect to Richard Donner's work on 1 and 2. Singer even goes as far as reproducing the same title and end sequences. Definitely a must see for any Superman fan. Unfortunately I don't think it'll do well overall considering how incredibly expensive the movie ended up being over the decade or so it was in the works. Oh well. It looks like Singer is ready to make the sequel already according to IMDB.
So this is going to be an interesting week for me work wise. I'm going for some training "down south" on Thursday and Friday. Unfortunately we still don't know if the training is in Toronto or in Waterloo. I'll be going with one other guy from work and this will be my first business trip. Still not sure who's driving or when we're leaving, but I would think we'll leave Wed after work at the latest. If the training ends up being in Toronto I'd like to stay the entire weekend so I can visit Dana and Andy but that all depends on the other guy. We'd have to take two vehicles then. Hopefully we'll figure it all out tomorrow.
Well it's more than about time I went to bed. I doubt I'll have a computer and internet with me so most of you probably won't hear from me for a week.
Matthew.
