My Love Affair With Nintendo
Even though I never owned a single Nintendo in my life it was a large part of my childhood. I used to spend hours at one friend's house playing Super Mario Bros, Super Mario 3, Ninja Gaiden and Double Dragon. And then my best buddy Rob got a Super Nintendo so we spent hours playing Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda - Link to the Past, Super Metriod, Sim City, and the list goes on. We even used to hook up his SNES to his Amiga monitor which looked so much nicer than on a TV.
Once I got to University retro-gaming was where it was at. I'd spend hours playing Dr. Mario for NES with friends, having a blast messing each other up by completing combos to dumb garbage pill in their area. At school we downloaded SNES emulators in the computer lab and played Tetris Attack against each other over the network between classes. I bought Jenita, my ex, an old NES one summer because she wanted one. We spent a few afternoons playing Super Mario Brothers 3.
Now, after all these years, I've finally purchased my first Nintendo system -
[begin fanfare] The Nintendo DS Lite! [/end fanfare]
This is very exciting for me as you might have guessed. The Nintendo DS (DS for Dual Screen) has been out for a while, but this weekend Nintendo released the Lite version here in North America. "Lite" refers to the brighter screen. There are four brightness levels and the picture you see below was using the lowest setting. They also redesigned the case which is now much sleeker. It's very hard not to compare their design to an Apple product, especially with the glossy white plastic. The bottom screen is touch sensitive so it comes with a stylus similar to one you'd use on a palm pilot.
I bought two games: New Super Mario Brothers, and Tetris DS - how could one own a Nintendo handheld system without having a Super Mario and a Tetris game? I also bought a leather case for it as well as some screen protectors. I wanna keep this as clean as my car... good thing I won't be leaving it under any trees. :D
