My Easter Adventure - Part 1
Thursday right after work I took the transit to National Car rental and picked up my car. I had a choice between an Impala, a Grand Prix, or some type of Kia. Having already driven an Impala down in the States, and no real desire to drive a Kia, I chose the Grand Prix. By the time all the paper work was done, and I picked up my luggage at home it was after 5 pm, so on the way out of town I picked up some supper from Wendy's and ate as I left the city.
The Grand Prix was a pretty nice ride. It felt a little odd with the radio console being turned towards me. The front seats are also a little too firm, but they were comfortable enough. By pure accident I discovered a pretty fun feature. In the middle of the dash, between the driver's and passenger's seat is an information display. By default the mileage is shown, but with a few button pushes you can have it display just about anything you want. You can even choose between kilometers and miles. My directions from MapQuest were in miles so I figured, "Great, I'll put the trip meter in miles." I glanced at my speedometer to check my speed and did a double take. The needle had dropped from 100 to 60 and an indicator light had changed to let me know it was now reading in mph. Too cool!
Never again will I get directions in Canada from MapQuest. They were spot-on when I was down in the States, but not so here in Canada. Not only were all the distances wrong, it told me to go take a left onto the 401 instead of right. Because of this I ended up in Ajax, Ontario, about 45 minutes away from Mississauga. Oh well. Live and learn I guess. I finally pulled into Dana and Andy's at around 10:30 pm.
Driving on the 401 was pretty overwhelming at first. I felt like I was driving the freeway from The Matrix Reloaded. I'm sure my knuckles were pretty white for the first 15 minutes. It just seemed like total chaos. I don't remember feeling that overwhelmed when driving in the States even though the highways where just as large. Maybe it was just anxiety from not completely knowing where I was going. After figuring out I was lost and calling Dana and Andy from Ajax my fear was totally gone though - I was on a mission and just wanted to arrive.
They had tried to keep Nathan up for me, but 10:30 pm was definitely too late for him. So we chatted for about an hour and made a few plans for the next day, Good Friday, and went to bed.
To be continued...
