A New Year Begins

This holiday season has been a bit of a drag so far. Here I am starting week two of my two week vacation and I'm plenty bored. And by plenty bored I resorted to cleaning today, but more on that later.

Now I realize that Christmas isn't about the loot, but I was hoping for at least one thing fun for my Birthday and/or Christmas. I'm definitely having a hard time getting excited about receiving houseware stuff this year. I'm sure I'll appreciate the toaster, dishes, pots and pans, and tea towels, once I find and move into a place, but right now... they are just sitting in my closet. I think I did well with my shopping, just wish I didn't have to cave and get a gift card for Jen.

Jen came up from Toronto and ended up getting sick. We're not sure if it was the flu or food poisoning, but it meant all our plans for visiting relatives were cancelled after she got sick on Boxing Day. I had planned on visiting with James, Amanda and their new daughter Kirsten on Wednesday, but I wasn't going to risk giving them whatever Jen had. Pretty much everyone else was out of town so I spent the week in my room trying to find things to keep myself occupied.

New Years Eve some of us went skating/sliding and then hung out until the wee hours of the morning. I definitely enjoyed the chance to get out of the house. I did pretty well skating and didn't end up with any lasting pain. I couldn't really feel my toes at one point so I took off my skates. All the blood rushing to them warmed up my toes pretty quick. Heh heh. I ended up eating a little too much junk at the party after so I didn't sleep too well once I got home at 2:30am.

Our church service yesterday was at noon so we all got to sleep in. After church I went to visit with James and Amanda. We had KD for lunch and watched Star Wars Episode 3. And I got to hold Kirsten who is so tiny. She was three weeks premature, but perfectly healthy. I think she's maybe 6 or 7 pounds now. I came home for supper and Christi-Ann, Dwight and Brady were over. I didn't get to spend any time with Brady though cause Dwight doesn't like to pass him around and Jen was leaving this morning so she wanted time with him too. It's still pretty frustrating having Brady over and not really being allowed to play with him much.

And so we come to today and cleaning. Today has been a rough day because of my cleaning. I've had some boxes downstairs that I never went through after we moved a few years ago. It was stuff I didn't need like text books, schools notes, and the like. Well I was bored enough to final tackle those boxes. I just remembered there must be another box somewhere cause I can think of some other books I didn't see. Well one of the boxes contained a number of items I didn't expect. Namely things from when Jenita and I were together. Notes from her. Little things she made me to remind me of her while she was away for the summer or Christmas. Letters that began with the words, "Hello my love". *sigh* The "contract" she and I made up to govern our physical contact with each other. A letter I wrote to her but never sent trying to put into words how much I was struggling with her being out of town for 4 months. I thought I had thrown all that stuff away. I threw some stuff out the day I learned she was dating someone else. She got married this summer.

I also had to go through all my Engineering notes and texts from Ottawa. Another period of my life that brings me pain: my failure at school. The city I remember with much fondness, mostly because it was my first taste of real freedom. But it's awfully hard to think of Ottawa and not think about why I'm not there anymore.

Anyway. I'm off to go find something to distract myself with. Movie or computer game? Who knows.

Matthew.
