Why I Still Like Nintendo
Nintendo's Genre Innovation Strategy: Thoughts on the Revolution's new controller
As an avid computer gamer, the above article rings very true to me. It's not a light read at all but it does an amazing job and describing the difference between a company like Nintendo (innovative and genre inventor) and a company like Microsoft (all about standards and genre milker). Nintendo has always been about innovation. Just look at all the different products they have released over the years. Look at the controllers for those products. From game system to game system they are always trying something new, something different, something ground breaking. Sure some things fail horribly like the Power Glove, the Super Scope, and the Virtual Boy. But others ended up being rock solid, genre defining systems like the original Nintendo, Game Boy, Game Boy DS. All I know is that I've been thinking about buying a Game Cube for two reasons - to play Nintendo exclusive titles like The Legend of Zelda and to try Donkey Konga with it's crazy drum controllers. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what new game genres the new remote-like controller for the next Nintendo spawns.
Anyways, if you're interested in game design at all, check out the article.
