Sweet Home Alabama

After a bit of an ordeal the night before I left, a many hours of driving later, I'm here in Saraland Alabama.

Monday night Bryan and I went to pick up my car and look for some shades. We got to Budget and the lady at the desk congratulated us on getting there when we did. She had 5 reservations for the day, but only 4 cars left. When I was making my reservation online I had decided to rent a Mustang instead of the economy class car since it was only $50. So needless to say I was really really looking forward to getting to drive a new Mustang. The new retro styling of the car is just fantastic. So needless to say I was pretty disappointed when she handed me the keys for a Chevy Impala. Sure it was an "upgrade" because it's a full sized, four door, but not in my eyes. Going from a Mustang to an Impala was quite the downgrade. I suppose I could have made a stink about it and asked if any of the other Budget's around Boca had a Mustang, but I was too disappointed to care at that point.

After we dropped the car off at Bryan's place we went for a little shopping adventure. First we went to find a radio transmitter for my iPod since the rental car didn't have a tape deck. I was hoping to get use my cassette adapter on my trip but no such luck. Luckily we found what I needed at the second store we stopped at. The Griffin iTrip allows my iPod to play tunes over radio frequencies as long as you pick an empty station. For some silly reason it never occurred to me that it would require more power to run so my iPod's battery didn't last the whole car ride like I had hoped. So, while I'm here I'll pick up a car charger.

Next we went to find me some shades. The first place we went to was closed. The second place had a very small selection, so we ended up going to a large mall in the ritzier part of Boca. After looking at two places in there we figured we should get something to eat while I think about whether I wanted to spend $160 US on the pair of Oakley's that I liked the best. After the Burdon Chicken, rice, and noodles I figure the glasses we worth the price since the lenses are polarized which greatly reduces glare while driving. We had left Bryan's at around 4:15pm and got back just after 9pm so we were pretty beat. Carol made fun of Bryan a little cause he usually doesn't go shopping with him, let alone for that long. Heh heh.

By 7:30am yesterday I hit the road and stared my 700 mile drive to Alabama. There was a fair bit of traffic most of the way, but it was always moving so I made really good time. I was very thankful to see the limit was 70 mph which meant my trip would be close to 10 hours. It really wasn't that much different than driving in Canada. There's not a whole lot to look at along the road. When my iPod started to lose power I turned it off so I'd still have enough power to look at my contacts. So I started channel surfing on the radio. There are a lot of Christian radio stations which is pretty cool. I stopped just twice along the way and pulled into Mobile/Saraland at 4:30pm local time. So in all the trip took me 10 hours. Ten hours of driving and I hardly had any fatigue at all to show for it. No back aches or headaches, or even leg aches. I have to admit that the Impala is a very comfortable car. Definitely not what I would have chosen, but God definitely chose it for me.

Once Jeremy and Alaina got home from work we just hung out, chatted, had dinner, and spent the night in general laughing at their dog who was going ballistic at having me around. That little Pug is a crazy ball of energy. I also had a little bit of fun playing with the tree frogs and bull frogs. I took a couple pics of them for my mom cause she was always the one catching them for us when we were kids.

Well I should wrap this up as Jeremy and Alaina are coming to get me for lunch in a few minutes. Hopefully it won't take me too long to get used to the 1 hour time difference while I'm here. Catch ya'll later. :)

Matthew.
