Playing with Sound
I got a new toy today that I ordered from Future Shop which is the Canadian version of Best Buy. I purchased a 5.1 surround sound speaker system for my computer made by Logitech: their Z-5300's to be more specific.
Wow these are nice speakers. They were a touch on the "I probably shouldn't spend this much money on one thing" side of things, but I think they are a good investment. I listen to music, play games and watch DVD movies on my computer, so now I can do all that in surround sound. I popped in Saving Private Ryan and man is it ever cool hearing the bullets whiz by behind you in the opening battle. Oh and did I mention they are THX certified? So they are definitely quality speakers.
I've found over the years that DVD movies tend to have the dialogue too quiet relative to the sound effects. So I'd always have to turn the sound up to hear the dialogue and then down when the action started. I always suspected it had something to do with not having a surround system and I was right. The center speaker handles all the dialogue and now I can turn that up louder than the sound effects which are played using the other four satelites.
It's going to take me a while to tweak the settings so it all sounds the way I want. I hope my parents don't get annoyed with the extra bass cause the sub-woofer is HUGE. It's definitely bigger than a bread box. lol
Here's what the speakers look like:
I would definitely recommend them to anyone who is thinking of upgrading their computer speakers. Oh and if Doom3 scared you before now it's even creepier when you can hear the monsters coming up behind you. Eep!
Matthew.
