Toby and Alysha Are Married!

Toby and Alysha's wedding this weekend was a lot of fun. Having your wedding out in the middle of the forest at a church camp is quite interesting. I can't imagine a more beautiful setting, but man was it ever hot and muggy. I haven't sweat that much in a very long time. I was very happy I brought my Nalgene bottle with me because I was drinking water constantly.

Everything on Saturday was very casual and relaxed. A big tent was set up in the middle of the field for the ceremony and it was quite full of people by the time it all started. This was my first experience being a wedding musician and it was pretty fun. Definitely an honor to play the songs they requested during the ceremony. We played "Meet With Me" by Ten Shekel Shirt as Alysha walked up the aisle. While they were signing the registry we played "Your Love is Deep" by Jami Smith. And then after it was all said and done, as they walked down the aisle together we played, (snicker snicker), "We Are the Champions" by Queen. Too funny. The ceremony was short and sweet. The most interesting part was them reading their vows to each other. Toby isn't one for expressing his emotions so it was pretty impressive hearing him express his feelings for Alysha like that.

After the ceremony there was a receiving "crowd" to keep with the informalness of the wedding. Then we got "free time" to do what we wanted. Those that hadn't been to Camp Norland before went exploring. Some went swimming. I helped clear out the chairs and catch up with people that I hadn't seen in a long time. It definitely makes you feel old seeing campers grow up into men and women.

The dinner was a buffet with caesar salad, pasta, potatoes, steamed veggies and chicken parmesan. With 130+ people in the dinning hall and the kitchen pumping out heat, people quickly started bringing their food outside to escape the sauna. The kissing game involved telling a story or singing a song. They got off lucky though because of the heat. Heh heh. Dessert was yummy cupcakes.

After some more free time there was a camp fire with plenty of silly songs in general and some specifically for Toby and Alysha. There was no actual fire because there was a fire ban in place due to the dry forest conditions. Once the camp fire was over people went back to the dinning hall for kareoke. Not being a big kareoke fan myself I hung out outside with a friend for the most part. And with the end of kareoke that was the end of the official wedding day. Some of us stayed over night at camp, playing cards or chatting until around midnight. Toby and Alysha went to a cabin on the other side of the lake for some privacy.

So all in all it was a really nice wedding. I'm definitely glad I was able to be a part of the day both as a musician and as a friend. It was great being back at Camp Norland and seeing a lot of familiar faces. I really miss that place and those people. It's like a whole other world there and I wish I was still there. A place that isn't run by the clock. A place to relax, reflect, and enjoy God's creation.

Matthew.
