Why I'm Rarely Excited About Sunday Mornings

One of the major problems I have with my church is how they do the music in the mornings. All Nations is the kind of church that tried to look as perfect as it can on Sunday mornings. And that philosophy extends to sounding perfect as well. Now there's nothing wrong with trying to do your absolute best, especially when it comes to doing something for God, but it makes serving God from the front of the church quite intimidating. Many times when we, No Idols, have led worship in the morning service, we've had to make sure to stop before hand in order to keep from getting overcome by worry about how we're going to sound.

The main worship team can be quite showy and it's the reason why I've never joined it. There are those on that team that are there to be seen on stage and if they weren't on stage they probably wouldn't come to church at all. They have also been starting to use backing tracks with their song. This, in and of itself is perfectly fine. Those tracks consist mostly of extra percussion and other instruments like horns and strings. Because they do this they have to play the song, the same way every single time. Even the speed has to be the same so the live band doesn't get out of sync with the pre-recorded sections. It's definitely taken a bit of getting used to.

Well this Sunday's music made a few of us quite upset. Pretty much all the songs picked had backing tracks and a few of the songs/arrangements aren't that great. First off a few of them just aren't done well and don't work at all to bring the church into a worshipful spirit. The band sure gets hyped up, but my friends and I can't get into it. At least two of the songs however ended up having a pre-recorded bass part: fine and dandy as long as you don't have a live bass player being dubbed over because of it. It was ridiculous. The heartbreaking part was watching Toby (the bass player) realize that his playing was being completely covered up by the recording. The electric guitar player on the other hand could be heard loud and clear. Don't even get me started on the fact that the electric guitar player isn't from our church and was paid to play unlike the rest of the band. Toby has put out ads for a new bass player cause he'd rather play electric, but no one has come forward. So you'd think they'd pay for a bass player right? Nope. I felt like running back to the sound board and yelling at the "professional" sitting behind it to turn Toby's bass playing on. His mixes tend not to included everyone that's playing, but that's a whole other story. All I have to say is poor Toby. I still haven't gotten his side of the story.

*sigh* Needless to say it was not a good Sunday morning. I couldn't concentrate on the message at all because of that. This weekend we're going to Cecil Facer so it'll be nice to get away from the church and serve those troubled kids.

Matthew.
